Roopa Ganguly

Roopa Ganguly (born 25 November 1966 in Kalyani, near Kolkata, West Bengal, India) is an Indian actress, playback singer, and politician who currently serves as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Sonarpur Dakshin constituency.

She is best known for her iconic portrayal of Draupadi in B.R. Chopra's 1988 television series Mahabharat, which brought her widespread prominence across India.

She received her schooling from Beltala Girls High School in Kolkata and later earned a science degree from Jogamaya Devi College, Kolkata. She is a trained Rabindra Sangeet vocalist and classical dancer, and she has received awards including a National Award and BFJA Awards for her work in acting.

Her acting career began in the 1980s with Bengali television shows such as Ganadevta and Sukanya, after which she entered films with her debut movie Kadana (1988). She subsequently acted in both Hindi and Bengali cinema, establishing herself as a leading lady with box office credits including Pyaar Ka Devta (1990), Inspector Dhanush (1991), Janani (1993), and Gopalaa (1995).

After taking a hiatus from acting, she returned in 2000 with Bariwali, followed by films such as Anamni Angana (2002), Mahulbanir Sereng (2004), Nagordola (2005), and Antarmahal (2006). Her later film credits include Luck (2009), Abosheshey (2012), Barfi! (2012), Arshinagar (2015), Natoker Moto (2015), and Golmaal (2017).

In 2015, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2016 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. She was nominated as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha by the President of India in October 2016, serving until April 24, 2022, completing her six-year term.

During her time with the BJP, she also served as the President of the BJP Mahila Morcha (BJP Women's Wing) in West Bengal.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Election, she contested as a BJP candidate for the Sonarpur Dakshin seat, facing incumbent TMC actress Lovely Maitra in a high-profile contest.

She won the election and became a Member of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly, with her term beginning on 4 May 2026. She is female, 59 years old, and a graduate by education. Ganguly was married to Dhrubo Mukerjee from 1992 until 2006, and she has a son named Akash.
