Samantha Ruth Prabhu (born April 28, 1987) is an acclaimed Indian actress who works predominantly in Telugu and Tamil film industries.
She is one of the highest-paid South Indian actresses and has established herself as a leading figure in South Indian cinema, having appeared in over 40 films across 11 years.
She grew up in Pallavaram, Chennai, in a modest, multicultural household. She completed her schooling at Holy Angels Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and later graduated with a degree in commerce from Stella Maris College, Chennai. Close friends and family lovingly call her "Yashoda," a nickname she later embodied when starring in the 2022 action thriller titled Yashoda.

Her career began with part-time modeling while pursuing her commerce degree. She was introduced to films by director Gautham Menon. Although she signed Ravi Varman's Moscowin Kavery in mid-2007 (released in 2010), her first major release and acting breakthrough was Gautham Menon's critically acclaimed Telugu romance Ye Maaya Chesave (2010), which was a simultaneous remake of the Tamil film Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa.
The film created significant hype prior to its release, primarily due to the successful soundtrack by A. R. Rahman. For this performance, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut – South, receiving the award in both Tamil and Telugu languages.
She became the second actress to win both the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil and Best Actress – Telugu in the same year, for her performances in the 2012 films Neethaane En Ponvasantham and Eega, respectively.
Over the following years, she played the leading lady in numerous top-grossing androcentric films, including Dookudu (2011), Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (2012), Attarintiki Daredi (2013), Kaththi (2014), Theri (2016), 24 (2016), Mersal (2017), and Rangasthalam (2018). Her performance in A Aa (2016) won her fourth Filmfare Award.
She gained further praise for her performances in Mahanati (2018), Super Deluxe (2019), and Majili (2019). She also ventured into television with the Amazon Prime Video thriller series The Family Man, playing a role in its second season, which earned her a Filmfare OTT Award. Her recent filmography includes Jaanu (2020), Oh Baby (2019), Yashoda (2022), Shaakuntalam (2023), and Kushi (2023). In 2025, she appeared in Subham.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu is a recipient of several prestigious awards, including four Filmfare Awards South, two Nandi Awards, six South Indian International Movie Awards, and three CineMAA Awards. She has won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in both Tamil and Telugu categories, demonstrating her versatility across language industries.
