Harivansh Rai Bachchan was an Indian Hindi poet and writer, born on 27 November 1907 in Babupatti, in the then United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in British India, and he died on 18 January 2003.
He became one of the major voices of early 20th-century Hindi literature and is especially associated with the Nayi Kavita movement and with poetry recitations at Kavi Sammelans.
He is best known for his celebrated poem collection Madhushala, first published in 1935, which brought him wide recognition and remains his most famous work.

His literary career spanned more than five decades, during which he became known for his lyrical style and for helping shape modern Hindi poetry.
He studied at Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University, later taught English literature at Allahabad University, and also pursued research at Cambridge University, where he earned a doctorate on W. B. Yeats and occultism. He worked in broadcasting and government service as well, while continuing to write, translate, and promote Hindi literature.
He was married first to Shyama and later to Teji Suri, and he was the father of actor Amitabh Bachchan and Ajitabh Bachchan. In recognition of his contribution to Hindi literature, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976.
