Balakumaran

Balakumaran was an Indian Tamil writer, novelist, poet, and screenwriter known for his wide-ranging work in fiction, history, spirituality, and film.He was born on 5 July 1946 in Palamaneri near Thirukkattupalli in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, and died on 15 May 2018.

He grew up in an orthodox Tamil Brahmin family and was influenced early by Tamil classical devotional works through his mother’s encouragement. His reading of the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and later the writings of Ramana Maharshi shaped both his literary themes and his spiritual outlook.

He began his writing career as a poet and later moved into short stories and novels. Over time, he became one of the most prolific Tamil writers, producing roughly 150 to 273 novels, more than 100 short stories, and numerous novellas, depending on the source, with several works seeing multiple reprints and wide readership.

Balakumaran is especially remembered for historical novels such as Udayar, a six-volume work on Raja Raja Chola, and Gangai Konda Chozhan. His writing often combined human emotion, family life, history, mythology, and spiritual reflection, which helped him appeal to both general readers and serious literary audiences.

He also worked in Tamil cinema as a screenplay and dialogue writer, contributing to films and gaining recognition for his film writing. Sources note that he later stepped away from cinema to devote more time to fiction.
