Salim Kumar born on 10 October 1969 was an Indian actor, director, and writer who worked predominantly in Malayalam cinema. Widely regarded as one of the most prominent and influential actors in the history of Malayalam cinema, he appeared in over 300 films across a career spanning three decades.
He won the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2010 for his performance in Adaminte Makan Abu. Salim Kumar was born on 10 October 1969 in Chittatukara, North Paravur, Kerala, India, as the youngest son of Gangadharan and Kausalya.
His father was an atheist and a follower of the veteran social reformer Sahodaran Ayyappan, and named his son Salim Kumar to avoid religious associations.

He attended Govt. Lower Primary School in Chittattukara North Paravur, went to high school at Govt. Boys High School North Paravur, and completed his pre-degree education at Sree Narayana Mangalam College Malyankara, Moothakunnam.
Initially aspiring to become a singer, he later took up mimicry and graduated with a BA from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam, where he won the university's mimicry title three times. He started his stage career at Kalabhavan and was also a performer in Comicola, a comedy program on Asianet. For about four years, he was associated with professional drama at Arathi Theatres, Kochi.
Before entering the Malayalam film industry, Salim Kumar was chosen as host for the comedy programme Comicola broadcast on Asianet. He made his debut in Malayalam cinema with the 1997 family drama Ishtamanu Nooru Vattam, directed by Siddique Shameer.
After performing some minor roles in numerous movies, he was later noted for his performance in Satyameva Jayathe, which was released in 2000. Director Rafi Meccartin offered him a role in Thenkasipattanam after getting impressed with his performance in Satyameva Jayathe, and this was a major breakthrough in his film career. Thenkasipattanam was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2000.
Throughout the 2000s, Salim Kumar became one of Malayalam cinema's most beloved comedians, delivering memorable performances in numerous commercial successes. His unique dialogue delivery and expressive acting made him a household name among audiences across Kerala.
He played some of the most memorable comedy roles in 2003, including a psychic mental patient in the cult movie C.I.D. Moosa, Omanakkuttan in Thilakkam, Usman in Kilichundan Mampazham alongside Mohanlal, and S.I. Gabbar Keshavan in Pattalam starring Mammootty.
In the romantic-comedy Pulival Kalyanam, he played Manavalan, which critics acclaim as the best comedy character played by Salim Kumar.
His potential to do character roles was revealed in 2004 after receiving critical acclaim for his role in the Kamal movie Perumazhakkalam. His role as the father in Achanurangatha Veedu (2005), directed by Lal Jose, was a major break in his acting career when he was able to shrug off the usual idiot-fool-illiterate comedic roles for which he seemed destined.
This role won him the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor.
A major turning point in his career came with the film Adaminte Makan Abu, in which he portrayed the title character Abu, an ageing perfume seller whose last wish is to go on Haj with his wife.

He lived in North Paravur-Ernakulam District in a house called "Laughing Villa". He was married to Sunitha, and the couple had two sons, Chandu Salim Kumar and Aromal. His son Chandu acted in the film Manjummel Boys.
He was a member of the Indian National Congress in Kerala. He wrote a memoir called Eeshwara Vazhakkillallo (also spelled Ishwara Vazhakkillello), which was released at North Paravur in 2023. He conducted a mimicry troupe called Cochin Stallions, which introduced cine-serial actor Ramesh Pisharody and many other talents.
On 6 June 2026, Salim Kumar was admitted to Amrita Hospital in Kochi due to physical difficulties and was put on a ventilator after his health condition deteriorated. He had been battling liver-related health issues for several years and had been diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, which he clarified was hereditary and not linked to alcohol consumption.
Later that night at 10:43 PM IST, he was pronounced dead at the age of 56. He passed away after a long liver-related illness, leaving behind a legacy of 300 films and acclaimed performances.
