Kritika Kamra Opens Up on Casting Couch Encounter in News18 Interview

Kritika Kamra Breaks Silence on Casting Couch Experience and Industry Bias

In a candid and revealing conversation with News18, actress Kritika Kamra opened up about the darker realities of the entertainment industry, including her early “brush with the casting couch,” navigating entrenched hierarchies, and challenging stereotypes about intelligence and background.

Reflecting on her initial years in the industry, Kritika revealed that while she had heard of the casting couch, she personally encountered a situation that could have gone wrong.

I had a brush with it but got off unscathed. It was just luck and chance. It wasn’t because I was too smart,” she admitted.

Coming from a non-film background, Kritika emphasized how vulnerability and lack of guidance can make outsiders more susceptible in the early stages of their careers. Starting young, she relied largely on instinct and circumstance rather than industry know-how.

Kritika began her journey with television and quickly rose to popularity. However, transitioning into films wasn’t easy. It was the political drama series Tandav that she credits as a turning point in her career.

Despite her growing success in the streaming space, she says the stigma associated with being a “TV actor” hasn’t fully faded.

One of the most striking revelations from the interview was Kritika’s perspective on the entertainment industry’s internal structure.

There’s an unsaid hierarchy, which is like feudalism in a way,” she explained.

Coming from a small town, she once viewed all on-screen performers equally. However, her experience in the industry exposed her to subtle but persistent discrimination based on background, medium (TV vs films), and perception.

Kritika also spoke about a less-discussed challenge being underestimated intellectually.

I think they think of me as someone who isn’t smart… Nobody said it outright, but that’s the understanding I got,” she shared.

She added that people often seemed surprised when they discovered she had knowledge beyond acting an assumption she finds both limiting and revealing of deeper biases within the industry.

Throughout her career, Kritika has remained firm about one thing portraying women with agency. Identifying herself as a feminist, she has consciously avoided regressive roles.

Even in her debut film Mitron, she ensured her character wasn’t a stereotypical damsel in distress. She also revealed turning down roles that offered little more than brief appearances or ornamental presence.

I don’t want to do just about anything to be part of a big film,” she asserted.

Today, Kritika Kamra stands as an example of resilience in an industry often criticized for favoritism and bias. From navigating uncomfortable early experiences to challenging systemic hierarchies, she continues to carve her own path one rooted in authenticity and purpose.

Her story is not just about survival in showbiz, but about redefining it on her own terms.
